The novel Maid by Stephanie Land touched my heart in a way no other book has. Stephanie portrays my own mother’s struggle during the 90s– a single mom on welfare juggling a part-time job, two kids, and no help while trying to complete a degree. There aren’t many contemporary authors writing books about single mothers and the stigma of having to take money from the government to survive. Stephanie is like the modern, Jacob Riis, but tells her own story; her personal experience on how the other half lives and reminds us that not much has changed for the poor from the time Riis published his book in 1890, regardless of the improvements made over the years. The memoir also sends a message that with determination, anything is possible no matter the circumstance, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
